Jockey Club Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme recognises outstanding performances at World University Games and National Games

09/27/2017

The Jockey Club Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme recognises sports stars who earn glory for Hong Kong by winning medals in six major competitions, including the World University Games and National Games. Today (27 September), the Club’s Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges joined Secretary for Home Affairs Lau Kong-wah, Chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) Dr Lam Tai-fai to congratulate the awardees on their outstanding performances.

Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges noted that sport was one of four strategic focus areas of the Club’s Charities Trust donations. “We believe it is important to support our best athletes as they strive for excellence, and one other reason to support them is that their effort and achievement can inspire the community - creating pride and bringing people together”, he observed. “Above all, these positive values can motivate the community to become more physically active.”

Last year, the Trust donated more than HK$18 million to the HKSI to support the Jockey Club Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme for three years. Cash awards are provided to those winning medals at the six major games, namely the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Asian Games, Asian Para Games, National Games and World University Games.

The Hong Kong teams achieved best-ever results at both the 29th World University Games in Taipei and 13th National Games in Tianjin this year.  Athletes receiving awards for the University Games were swimmer Siobhan Haughey, who won gold medals in the women’s 100m and 200m freestyle events; tennis players Wong Chun-hun and Yeung Pak-long, who were bronze medallists in the men’s doubles; and wushu athlete Juanita Mok, who won bronze in the women’s taolu taijiquan & taijian.

National Games awardees included cycling gold medallists Pang Yao and Yang Qianyu in the women’s madison and Leung Chun-wing in the men’s omnium; fencer Nicholas Choi, who won silver in the men’s individual foil; cyclist Sarah Lee Wai-sze, who won bronze medals in the women’s sprint and keirin; and HKJC Equestrian Team members Jacqueline Siu and Clarissa Lyra, who clinched a silver medal in the individual dressage competition and a bronze in the individual jumping respectively.

The Club has donated more than HK$710 million to support the hardware and software development of the HKSI since the early 1970s and to help Hong Kong’s elite athletes perform on the world stage. This included the establishment of the HKSI (then called the Jubilee Sports Centre), involving the reclamation of land, the construction of buildings and training tracks, as well as the establishment of an endowment fund. In 2013, the Club also supported the redevelopment of the former athletes’ hostel into the Jockey Club Sports Building.
