Club supports Lumières Hong Kong to boost public’s appreciation for arts and heritage

11/23/2017

To enrich Hong Kong citizens' experiences of arts, culture and heritage, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is supporting the first Lumières Hong Kong festival as its Principal Founding Partner. The three-day event from today to 25 November features a series of light installations, art pieces, live performances and dining at 16 local landmark sites and heritage buildings. The Club is also supporting a wide range of free educational and outreach activities to help the general public and visitors rediscover the city in a bright new light.

The Club is again working with the Association Culturelle France Hong Kong, its major partner in Le French May Arts Festival, to bring this art extravaganza to Hong Kong.  Today (23 November), Club Chairman Dr Simon S O Ip joined Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR Carrie Lam; Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Betty Fung; Director of Leisure and Cultural Services Michelle Li; Commissioner for Tourism Cathy Chu; Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board Dr Peter Lam; Chairman of Lumières Hong Kong Dr Andrew Yuen; Vice President of Lyon Metropole Alain Galliano; Founding Director of Lumières Hong Kong Julien-Loïc Garin; Consul General of France in Hong Kong and Macau Eric Berti; Ambassador of Lumières Hong Kong Carina Lau and other guests at the Lumières Hong Kong festival opening ceremony.

Dr Ip told the guests that the Club's support for Lumières Hong Kong was part of its wider support for arts, culture and heritage.  "We strongly believe in the importance of a culturally vibrant Hong Kong and in the power of the arts to enrich people's lives," he said.  "This event reminds us that our city is blessed with some remarkable buildings and open spaces.  We hope to immerse our citizens in the creative process and to deepen their appreciation for our city's heritage and culture."

The Club's donation of over HK$10 million has enabled an array of light works and projections to be created by local and international artists, who have turned heritage buildings in Central, Sheung Wan and Tsim Sha Tsui into canvases to rekindle Hong Kong's traditional culture through the art of illumination. In addition, it is funding the Jockey Club "Lumières Hong Kong" Education Outreach Programme, which is dedicated to enhancing local audiences' appreciation of their city's heritage and culture. This includes a series of neon light workshops, guided tours and lectures organised by local youth, education and social welfare organisations, designed to reach the widest audience possible with a particular focus on young people and those of different abilities. The outreach programme is anticipated to benefit over 50,000 students. For further information, please visit: http://lumiereshk.com/.

The Club has long been a staunch supporter of the city's arts, culture and heritage, which is one of the strategic focus areas of its Charities Trust donations, aimed at building a culturally vibrant Hong Kong, enriching lives and promoting social inclusion. The Central Police Station Revitalisation Project is among its notable current initiatives.
