Jockey Club supports new indoor swimming complex, bringing multiple benefits to students and other residents in North District

06/19/2018

In view of the increasing population in North District, and the resulting high demand for swimming pool facilities, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has provided Fung Kai Public School at Sheung Shui with funding support to construct a public indoor swimming complex for its students and other residents in the community.

Today (19 June), Club Deputy Chairman Anthony W K Chow joined Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung; Chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Institute Dr Lam Tai-fai; and Fung Kai Public School’s Chairman of the Board of Directors Liu Sui-biu and Chief Executive Officer Victor Fong, and other guests to perform the ground-breaking ceremony of the Jockey Club Fung Kai Indoor Swimming Complex.

“Sport is one of the Charities Trust’s strategic focus areas,” noted Mr Chow. “By funding various recreational facilities and sports projects, as well as combining innovation with sport, the Club aims to promote the development of sports in Hong Kong and encourage all citizens, especially our youth, to do more exercise. This will not only enable them to maintain good health; it can also help them build self-confidence and develop positive beliefs. We look forward to the opening of the swimming complex, so that more students and citizens can enjoy the benefits of sport.”

Funded by a donation of some HK$128 million from the Club’s Charities Trust, the Jockey Club Fung Kai Indoor Swimming Complex will cover a total operating area of 2,500 square metres and comprise a main pool with ten 25-metre lanes, and a preparation pool with five 15-metre lanes. The complex is also equipped with water therapy facilities, handrails and two portable aquatic lifts that enable wheelchair users to reach the pool without barriers; a viewing gallery that can cater for more than 500 spectators; and advanced timing equipment to help schools and clubs run swimming contests. Construction work is due to be completed in two years’ time. Upon completion of the complex, it is expected to benefit some 10,000 people per year.
