The Hong Kong Flower Show opened at Victoria Park today (20 March), welcoming citizens and visitors to enjoy its vibrant floral displays. The Hong Kong Jockey Club has supported the annual extravaganza since 2013, making it easier for people to enjoy active lifestyles and enriching their quality of life. The show is organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and is due to run until Sunday, 29 March.
Officiating at the opening ceremony were Dr Starry Lee, President of the Legislative Council of the HKSAR; Rosanna Law, HKSAR Government Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism; Vivian Sum, HKSAR Government Permanent Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism ; Manda Chan, HKSAR Government Director of Leisure and Cultural Services; Philip Lo, Steward of The Hong Kong Jockey Club; and Hera Chan, Actress and Miss Hong Kong 2018.
Under the theme “A Fragrant Journey through Hong Kong”, this year’s show casts the spotlight on the Stock flower, whose sweet smell and delicate colours can be seen to symbolise Hong Kong’s charm and resilience.
As the event’s major sponsor, the Club’s Charities Trust is supporting various community programmes to encourage public appreciation of greening and enjoyment of horticulture. One of the show’s key features is the Jockey Club Student Drawing Competition, in which students look to depict the beauty of flowers in bloom. This year, some 2,200 students from 250 primary and secondary schools and tertiary institutions are expected to participate. Students from 38 schools also took part in the Jockey Club Mosaiculture Display by Students Activity, contributing to a large-scale horticultural installation at the venue.
In addition, the Jockey Club Community Green Playground offers interactive games and nature-themed facilities made from recycled and reused materials for children and families to learn about greening and environmental protection. Volunteers from the Club’s CARE@hkjc team are on site as playground facilitators, helping children to explore the installations and reinforcing environmental messages. They will also serve as green ambassadors after the show, assisting in dismantling displays and reusing plants.
Further, the Club is promoting green education through the Jockey Club One Person, One Flower Scheme, which provides seedlings to students for free to nurture their interest in gardening. After the show, a number of flowers will be passed to schools and non-profit organisations under the “Give the Flowers a New Home!” Jockey Club Flower Re-planting Scheme, extending the life of the plants and supporting community greening.
To enable widespread participation, the Jockey Club HK Flower Show Transport Subsidy Scheme cum Guided Tour offers free transport and guided visits for senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, students and underprivileged families.
The Club’s support for Hong Kong Flower Show, like all its charity and community donations, is made possible by its unique integrated business model through which racing and responsible sports wagering generate substantial tax contributions, charity support and employment opportunities for Hong Kong.
