Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing hosts a 25th anniversary exhibition to raise public awareness of dementia

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing (JCCPA). To enhance public awareness of brain health, JCCPA will host a ten-day interactive exhibition named “Echoes of Memory: An Interactive Journey” from 1 October to 10 October. Through engaging and accessible interactive activities, the exhibition aims to promote knowledge about dementia and its associated risk factors to the public in an easy and approachable manner.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition was held today (30 September). Officiating were HKSAR Government Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun, Club Steward Bernard Chan, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Mental Health Dr Lam Ching-choi, and other guests.

At the ceremony, Club Steward Bernard Chan said that Health and Older Adults are two key priorities of the Club’s charities strategy. With dementia being one of the major challenges brought about by an ageing population, the Club took the initiative to establish the JCCPA in collaboration with The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hospital Authority 25 years ago. This pioneering effort resulted in Hong Kong’s first comprehensive one-stop service centre dedicated to providing holistic care for dementia patients. Employing new standards of care and support, JCCPA empowers individuals with dementia and their caregivers to navigate the challenges of the disease as it progresses, while providing professional training, evidence-based research opportunities and public education to foster a dementia-friendly community in Hong Kong. Since its establishment, JCCPA has provided nearly 400,000 residential, respite and day care services to individuals with dementia.

The Club endeavours to promote innovative service models not only to address immediate needs of older adults, but also to drive transformations in elderly care, enabling older adults to age actively with dignity. Over the years, the Club has supported more than 30 dementia-related projects, including the Jockey Club “Brain Health” Dementia Screening and Community Support Project currently implemented across the territory. A collaboration of JCCPA and seven NGOs, the project offers early diagnosis and support services to those suspected of mild cognitive impairment or early-stage dementia through medical-social collaboration in primary healthcare settings. It is expected that approximately 9,600 individuals with these conditions and their caregivers will benefit from this three-and-a-half-year initiative.

The exhibition at D•PARK in Tsuen Wan features five interactive experience zones and invites the public to participate in all activities free of charge. In addition to revisiting the 25-year development of the JCCPA, visitors can learn about brain functions and 14 risk factors associated with dementia through interactive activities. By engaging in simulated scenarios and sensory experiences, participants gain firsthand insight into the daily challenges faced by individuals with dementia, fostering a deeper understanding of their needs.
