Training the Next Generation

Each year the Club recruits young hopefuls for its Racing Trainee programme, offering them the opportunity to develop a career in racing. Trainees receive a well-rounded education including riding, stable management, physical training, financial management and traditional academic subjects, with qualifications recognised by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications. Graduates go on to take up a variety of careers, with some entering the Apprentice Jockeys’ School, with the prospect of becoming a professional jockey.

In 2022, the Apprentice Jockeys’ School celebrated its 50th anniversary. To coincide with this the Club established the Racing Talent Training Centre comprising the Apprentice Jockeys’ School and the Racing Talent School. Drawing on the resources of professional sports science and higher education institutions, the Centre will boost the quality of training provided to riding and non-riding professionals in Hong Kong and the Mainland.

Well-known graduates of the Apprentice Jockeys’ School include Tony Cruz, Matthew Chadwick, Vincent Ho and Derek Leung. Several, having gone on to successful training careers, including Tony Cruz, Francis Lui, Frankie Lor, Ricky Yiu, Danny Shum and Manfred Man.
