Second Jockey Club Breast Health Centre opens in Kowloon

03/08/2018

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has provided funding of over HK$79 million to support the establishment of the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation Jockey Club Breast Health Centre (Kowloon) and run a three-year holistic Jockey Club Breast Care for You Programme, to help better meet the needs of at-risk women in Kowloon and the New Territories. The Centre was officially opened today (8 March).

Officiating guests at the opening ceremony included Club Steward the Hon Sir C K Chow; HKSAR Chief Executive Carrie Lam; Secretary for Food and Health Professor Sophia Chan; and the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation’s Patron Dr Edwin Leong, Founder Dr Polly Cheung and Chairman Eliza Fok.

“The Club believes that prevention is better than cure and has donated more than HK$1.5 billion to cancer-related projects over the past decade,” Mr Chow said. “Since 2010, it has donated over HK$100 million to the Foundation for setting up the Hong Kong and Kowloon Centres to promote breast health and screening services.”

The two-storey Kowloon facility is located near Ngau Chi Wan. It is the second one-stop service centre operated by the Foundation, after an earlier one also opened with support from the Jockey Club in North Point in 2011. It delivers a one-stop breast screening process comprising clinical breast examination, on-site mammography screening and ultrasound imaging services, breast cancer risk assess assessment and biopsy, as well as doctor consultation and referral.

The Centre will also provide patient support services, lymphoedema care and educational activities to publicise the threat of the disease and the importance of early detection.

With the Centre’s completion, a three-year Jockey Club Breast Care for You Programme for underprivileged women is also being rolled out. It comprises free screening and mammography services, patient support and breast health education, and is expected to benefit more than 36,000 people.
