Horse Livery for Members

Retired racehorses are available on loan as livery horses to all members who demonstrate the required riding and stable knowledge level. Horses are produced for livery through the Retired Horse Retraining Programme. When suitable horses are available, they are advertised with a brief description of their character both in and out of the stable, current training level and experience, suggestions for their ideal type of rider and a short video demonstrating their way of going. Each application is carefully considered against the horse’s temperament and education level so potential livery owners can be matched with their best possible equine partner. The application process to become a livery holder and the allocation of horses process is outlined here.

Once a horse has been taken on livery, there is a support mechanism in place to assist members with training and partnership building through the ‘Livery Starter Package’. The package provides three sessions (either schooling or lessons) with riders from the Retraining Unit (RTU) for the first three months of livery. The aim of the package is to help you and your horse settle into your new partnership. For further details including costs, please contact the BREC Administration Office for more details.

Livery horses are stabled in the main yard and members are welcome to enjoy all our facilities from 6:00am to 12:00 noon and from 2:00pm to 9:00pm, Tuesdays to Sundays. We provide all basic needs such as food, bedding, hand-walking and horse-walking assistance as well as farrier services and routine veterinary check-ups. Lessons, schooling, lunging and all other requests can be arranged through our Administration Office. The Stable Office is on hand to assist you with any further requests you may have regarding the care and management of your horse.
