Subject and Methodology

Develops the physical, mental and social capabilities of young people and fosters an attitude of excellence

Over the past three years, a total of 537 male players from local clubs and district teams, and 104 Hong Kong team players, all aged between 13 and 17, were enrolled as subjects of this pioneer project. Each group went through fitness tests on artificial turf in a specific sequence to measure their football-specific physical capabilities.

Countermovement Jump Test

Countermovement Jump Test was used to evaluate the player’s lower extremity muscle explosive power. On a jump mat, players were instructed to squat down to self-selected depth and jump immediately with arm swing. The best height out of 3 trials was selected.

20M Sprint Test

20M Sprint Test was used to evaluate the player’s linear speed performance. Players started from a static standing position. Time of completion was measured with infra-red speed gates positioned at the start and finish lines. The best time out of 2 trials was selected.

Arrowhead Agility Test

Arrowhead Agility Test required players to complete 2 designated routes, one each to the left and right directions. The total summation time was then recorded. Trial run in each direction was allowed.

YO-YO Intermittent Recovery Test (LEVEL 2)

YO-YO Intermittent Recovery Test (LEVEL 2) was used to assess the players’ aerobic endurance capacity. Players were asked to perform a series of 2x20m shuttle runs at a decreasing time interval with a 10-second recovery period in between runs. The test was terminated when a player failed to complete the shuttle within the time limit. The level and distance covered until termination was recorded.
