The former Bridges Street Market in Tai Ping Shan has been revitalised as the Hong Kong News-Expo, the first facility of its kind in the Asia Pacific region to highlight the important role in society of the media and journalism. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has supported preparatory works for the establishment of the Expo since its conceptual stage, and with its completion is now funding a three-year Media Education Programme for secondary students.
The opening ceremony of Hong Kong News-Expo was held today (5 December), with guests including Club Steward Dr Rosanna Wong Yick Ming; HKSAR Chief Executive the Hon Carrie Lam; Secretary for Development the Hon Michael Wong; Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Built Heritage Conservation Lau Chi-pang; Chairman of Hong Kong News-Expo John Chan; and Chairman of the Journalism Education Foundation May Chan.
Exhibition boards and interactive devices at the Expo showcase the historical development of local media from the earliest days of newspapers to radio, television and online news. Free seminars, workshops and guided tours will be organised regularly for local residents and visitors.
Apart from funding preparatory works for the Expo’s establishment, which included the setting-up of a working team and office, research, and the collection of media-related artefacts and information, the Trust is supporting a three-year Media Education Programme for secondary students. This will include guided tours, lectures led by veteran journalists and classroom exercises, all with the aim of developing students’ critical thinking and their knowledge of media and journalism. The Media Education Programme is expected to benefit over 50,000 students per year.
In addition, the Club is funding the opening exhibition of the Expo which marks the 10th anniversary of the Sichuan earthquake, so as to enhance public understanding of the many challenges faced by journalists when reporting on natural disasters.
