Jockey Club launches Membership Hospitality Academy offering degree-equivalent hospitality staff training

07/23/2019

As one of the major employers in Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Jockey Club helps build the capacity of our local workforce through its employee development programme. Today (23 July), the Club announced the official launch of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Membership Hospitality Academy, the first non-academic institute to run hospitality programmes with a QF Level 5 accreditation, which is equivalent to the QF level of a local Bachelor’s degree. The launch ceremony also marks the opening of a three-week job fair “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Membership Division – Path to An Extraordinary Career”, offering more than 500 job opportunities in more than 120 roles.

In his opening remarks, Club CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges spoke about the Club’s strong Membership team of 1,800 employees. He highlighted their significance to the Club with respect to maintaining a high standard of service, as well as the importance of its integrated business model of which its membership club is an integral part.

“Most importantly, they help build the Club’s reputation as one of Asia’s finest membership clubs, with the highest standard of service excellence. The Membership Hospitality Academy will help us sustain that high standard. In doing so it was also set a new benchmark for the hospitality industry in Hong Kong,” he said.

Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung said, “The establishment of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Membership Hospitality Academy marks another major milestone of the Jockey Club in its long-term commitment to enhancing professional development and encouraging lifelong learning among its staff.”

“Over the last decade, with the concerted efforts of our key partners including the Jockey Club, we have built a solid infrastructure for the development of a robust qualifications system that supports progression and facilitates recognition, that is, the Hong Kong Qualifications Framework (QF). I am confident that the future development of the QF will continue to support the Government’s initiative to step up promotion for vocational and professional education and training,” he added.

Club CEO and Mr Yeung, together with Chairman of The Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications Dr Alex Chan; Executive Director of The Employees Retraining Board Byron Ng and General Manager of Qualifications Framework Secretariat Steve Lai, officiated at the launch ceremony with Club Executive Director, Corporate Planning, Branding and Membership, Scarlette Leung; and Club Executive Director, People and Organisational Development, Dr Lake Wang.

HKJC Membership Hospitality Academy – an industry breakthrough

The new Membership Hospitality Academy will offer hospitality training programmes accredited under the Government’s QF Level 4 and 5. Eligible staff will receive qualified professional training and earn public recognition, which will benefit their future career development. The Membership Hospitality Academy sets a new benchmark for the hospitality industry in Hong Kong and is important because next year will see the opening of the New Clubhouse in Happy Valley, which will provide many opportunities for those who want to develop their hospitality career. Together with the existing Old Clubhouse, it will form The Hilltop in the Valley, a new signature destination for members.

Continuous development is one of the Club’s core values. Along with the other training programmes offered by The Hong Kong Jockey Club College and the Apprentice Jockey’s School of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, 25 programmes, from QF Level 1 to 5, are being offered to employees.
