Jockey Club supports state-of-the-art HKBU new campus to nurture creativity

11/26/2020

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust approved a HK$452 million donation to the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) to help establish the Jockey Club Campus of Creativity, which comprises a state-of-the-art creative hub and student residential halls. The donation is the Trust's largest ever to HKBU.

A campus naming ceremony was held today (26 November). Officiating guests included Club Chairman Philip Chen; Permanent Secretary for Education Michelle Li; University Grants Committee Secretary-General Professor James Tang; HKBU Council and Court Chairman Dr Clement Chen; and HKBU President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Roland Chin.

"The Jockey Club's support underlines our purpose — the betterment of society, and this is what we have been doing for Hong Kong for a long time," said Mr Chen. He added that the Jockey Club Campus of Creativity will not only supply a pipeline of talent for the creative industries, but will also benefit Hong Kong.

The Jockey Club Campus of Creativity will be the first complex in Hong Kong to integrate student accommodation, academic facilities and a co-creation space, allowing students to inhabit and mingle in a culturally and intellectually stimulating living and learning environment.

The student hostel, which will be comprised of four blocks, will have 1,726 places and a 1,900-square-metre student activity centre. The five-storey Jockey Club Creative Hub will offer a full-size scoring stage, a white-box experimental space and an open research studio available around the clock for residents of the student hostel. The aim is to encourage students' creativity in an open, flexible and technology-aided environment so they can conceive, collaborate on and experiment with new ideas.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club is a staunch supporter of education development. This support includes campus construction and development programmes at the eight UGC-funded universities and other self-financing institutions. It has also supported various educational initiatives to foster students' innovative thinking, inspire them to connect more deeply with the community and give back to society.
