Jockey Club-supported exhibition of Spanish artist Joan Miró promotes art for all

03/02/2023

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: “Joan Miró - The Poetry of Everyday Life” exhibition, exclusively sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club, will be held at the Hong Kong Museum of Art from 3 March until 28 June. Together with artists Picasso and Dalí, Miró is known as one of the “three greats of Spanish modern art”. Miró turned ordinary objects such as strings and dry leaves into extraordinary artworks. He is also known for his use of colourful geometric shapes and simple lines to create whimsical works that even children can easily engage with. Through this exhibition, visitors can learn how Miró’s work epitomises the interconnection of art and life.

The exhibition’s opening ceremony was held today (2 March) and officiated by HKSAR Government Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung, HKSAR Government Director of Leisure and Cultural Services Vincent Liu, the Club’s Executive Director of Charities and Community Dr Gabriel Leung, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to the People’s Republic of China Rafael Dezcallar de Mazarredo, Director of the Fundació Joan Miró Dr Marko Daniel, Chairman of the Museum Advisory Committee Douglas So and Museum Director of the Hong Kong Museum of Art Dr Maria Mok.

Dr Leung remarked that with the inclusion of work by local artists paying tribute to Miró’s pieces, the exhibition enables visitors to appreciate the charm of European art and culture through a relatable Hong Kong lens. The Club’s support for this exhibition not only aligns with its commitment to promote sports and culture – one of the focus areas of its charity strategy – but also supports the Central Government’s vision of developing Hong Kong into an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange, as outlined in the National 14th Five-Year Plan.

This exhibition showcases 94 artworks (including paintings, sculptures, drawings, textiles, lithographs and posters) and audio visual materials for the first time in Hong Kong, many of which come from the Fundació Joan Miró. To make art enjoyable for visitors of different backgrounds and ages, the exhibition carries easy-to-understand captions as well as extra guidance for primary school-age children. In its multimedia education corner, designed like a playground, visitors can experience Miró’s creative process by creating their own art through multimedia installations.

Other accompanying Club-supported education programmes include a series of lectures, guided tours and workshops to realise Miró’s aspiration of bringing art into daily life and to foster public interest in art.

The Club’s support for this exhibition, like all of its charity donations, is made possible by its unique integrated business model through which racing and wagering generate tax and charity support for the community. Indeed the Club’s support goes well beyond the financial. Together with its partners, the Club initiates and co-creates programmes targeting emerging or unmet community needs, while also working to build capacity in the community.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series is a partnership between the Club and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Launched in 2012, it has brought world-class exhibitions to Hong Kong, enabling visitors to appreciate masterpieces from different places, times and cultures. The exhibitions are complemented by a variety of education and outreach activities to make seemingly abstract artistic concepts more comprehensible. Recent exhibitions include Dunhuang: Enchanting Tales for Millennium; The Road to the Baroque – Masterpieces from the Capodimonte Museum and Women and Femininity in Ancient China – Treasures from the Nanjing Museum.
