As the Official Community Partner of the Volleyball Nations League Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Jockey Club has joined hands with the Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China to support the Jockey Club Community Volleyball Programmes. These will enable students, the underprivileged and the differently abled to experience the excitement of volleyball, including during the world-class tournament itself.

The opening ceremony of the tournament was held today (11 June) at the Hong Kong Coliseum and attended by HKSAR Government Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration Cheuk Wing-hing, Vice Minister of General Administration of Sport of China Liu Guoyong, Deputy Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR Pan Yundong, HKSAR Government Acting Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Lau Chun, Club Steward Dr Silas Yang, President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China Timothy Fok, President of Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China Wilfred Ng and other guests.

Sports & Culture is one of the strategic focus areas of the Club’s Charities Trust, through which the Club contributes to the betterment of our society. In recognition of the Club’s support, Club Steward Dr Silas Yang was presented with a volleyball signed by players from the China women’s national team by Wilfred Ng, President of the Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China. 

Starting from June this year, the Jockey Club Volleyball Community Programmes have enabled people of all ages and abilities to engage with the excitement of world-class volleyball. The programmes consist of:

·         Over 200 volunteers have been recruited and trained to assist with the tournament, including receiving participating teams and supporting venue set-up and promotion activities.

·         On 8 June, In Touch with the China Volleyball National Team saw more than 3,000 students, underprivileged residents and visually impaired people enjoy the China volleyball national team practice session. Some of the students also joined master classes, where they played volleyball and received training from China team players.

·         During the six-day tournament between 11 and 16 June, over 6,000 students, underprivileged residents, and people with disabilities, including the visually impaired assisted by an audio-description service, received complimentary tickets to enjoy the matches via the “Watch and Listen” Volleyball Game programme.   

·         Eight International Sports Booths were set up in the piazza of the Hong Kong Coliseum during the tournament, with students sharing information about the matches and the  participating countries while also learning about the sports industry.

·         To promote social inclusion, Enjoy Sitting Volleyball “As One” engaged local schools to promote sitting volleyball.
