The Hong Kong Jockey Club (the Club) marked the 28th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) today (Tuesday, 1 July) at Sha Tin by staging the Hong Kong Reunification Raceday.
Apart from exciting races, entrants participated in on-course activities, including live performances from TVB singing show “Midlife, Sing & Shine! 3” singers. Racegoers enjoyed free admission to both the Sha Tin and Happy Valley Public Enclosures. Together with Hong Kong’s world-class horse racing, an array of live music and entertainment was on offer at Sha Tin, as well as culinary and shopping discounts.
Run as a twilight fixture as part of Hong Kong racing’s ‘Summer Series’, the 10-race programme had two feature contests, the HK$2.84 million Class 2 Hong Kong Reunification Cup Handicap (1400m) and HK$1.86 million Class 3 Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup Handicap (1000m).
Bo Huang, Vic Teo and Liu Yang – from “Midlife, Sing & Shine! 3” performed at the opening ceremony, while fellow contestants Li Jin Kai, Gary Chiu, Dan James and Yanji Chan each featured near Mezza One during race intervals.
The Hong Kong Reunification Cup was run as Race 5. The Honourable Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen GBM GBS JP, President of the Legislative Council of the HKSAR, Mr Pan Yundong, Deputy Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the HKSAR, and Mr Li Shuguang, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Publicity, Cultural and Sports Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR presented trophies to the winning owner, trainer and jockey.
The Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup was run as Race 7. Mr Cui Jian, Director-General of Sports Bureau of the Guangdong Province and The Honourable Kenneth Fok Kai-kong BBS JP, Member of the Legislative Council of the HKSAR and Vice President of Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, presented trophies to the winning owner, trainer and jockey.
The Hong Kong Reunification Cup was won by the David Eustace-trained Light Years Charm under jockey Zac Purton. The Manfred Man-trained We Are Hero with Ellis Wong aboard took the Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club
Founded in 1884, The Hong Kong Jockey Club is a world-class racing club that acts continuously for the betterment of society.
