Guests at today’s (26 August) exhibition opening ceremony included Chan Kwok-ki, HKSAR Government Chief Secretary for Administration; Wang Songmiao, Secretary General of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; Sun Deli, Deputy Administrator of the National Cultural Heritage Administration; Rosanna Law, HKSAR Government Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism; Yang Fan, Secretary of the CPC Committee of the National Museum of China; Ann Kung, Steward of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, and other guests.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ann Kung, Steward of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, said the Club is honoured to be the sole sponsor of the exhibition and hopes it can deepen the public’s understanding of the War of Resistance and modern Chinese history, especially among the younger generation, thereby fostering a strong sense of national pride.
The exhibition showcases 183 artefacts from the War of Resistance on loan from the National Museum of China, Hong Kong cultural institutions and museums, and local collectors. These are supplemented by collections from the Hong Kong Museum of History, including valuable historical photos and videos. Together, they trace the origins, progression and conclusion of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, highlight its significance as the principal Eastern front of the World Anti-Fascist War, and the vital role of Hong Kong during the war.
The exhibition features an educational interactive corner where visitors can learn about the War of Resistance in engaging and dynamic ways. Highlights include some 20 interactive programmes through which attendees can learn about key historical figures associated with wartime Hong Kong and listen to speeches delivered at the victory of the War of Resistance.
During the exhibition, a series of educational activities will be held for the public, teachers and students, including workshops, lectures, thematic academic seminars and film screenings related to the war. Guided tours will also be available for the public, schools and people with disabilities, helping to raise awareness, strengthen national identity and promote patriotism among the public, educators and young people.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series (HKJC Series) is a partnership between the Club and the HKSAR Government’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Launched in 2012, the HKJC Series has brought world-class exhibitions to Hong Kong, enabling visitors to appreciate masterpieces from different places, times and cultures. The showcases are complemented by various educational and outreach activities. Recent exhibitions include “Cézanne and Renoir Looking at the World—Masterpieces from the Musée de l’Orangerie and the Musée d’Orsay”, held at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and “The Great Unity — Civilisation of the Qin and Han Dynasties in Shaanxi Province”, held at the Hong Kong Museum of History. To date, the Club’s Charities Trust has approved donations of over HK$354 million to Leisure and Cultural Services Department to organise more than 30 HKJC Series exhibitions.
The Club’s support for “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: United in Arms, Standing for Peace – 80th Anniversary of Chinese Victory in the War of Resistance Exhibition”, like all its charity and community donations, is made possible by its unique integrated business model through which racing and responsible sports wagering generate substantial tax contributions, charity support and employment opportunities for Hong Kong.
