With the ending of the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and 9th National Special Olympic Games (NGD & NSOG) on 15 December, all events of the National Games have now concluded. The Hong Kong Jockey Club (the Club) would like to offer its warmest congratulations to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) team for their outstanding achievements, which showcased the resilient Hong Kong spirit and brought positive energy to everyone in our community. Under the Jockey Club Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme, the Club was pleased to award a total of HK$11,475,000 and HK$6,843,750 to Hong Kong medallists at the 15th National Games and NGD respectively.
In recognition of the Club’s support, the Executive Committee of the National Games in the Guangdong Competition Region honoured the Club as an “Outstanding Contributor to Social Betterment”. The Club also received the title “Outstanding Contributor, the 15th National Games Equestrian Events” from the Competition Committee of Shenzhen Guangming District for its significant support in ensuring the success of the equestrian events.
This was the first time that Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao have co-hosted the three games. In support the Club committed over HK$500 million to the Hong Kong and Guangdong competition regions. The Club was also the sole Partner Sponsor of the Hong Kong Competition Region, where it supported volunteer service programmes, territory-wide community and school promotional activities, as well as initiatives to help underprivileged groups and young people attend the events.
The Club was especially honoured to have four events in the Hong Kong Competition Region named after it: The Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy Rugby Sevens Competition and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy Basketball (Men’s U22) Competition at the 15th National Games, and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy Wheelchair Fencing Competition and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy Para Table Tennis (TT11) Competition at the NGD & NSOG.
Some 100 members of the Club’s CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team helped out as Group Volunteers in the Hong Kong Competition Region. To enliven the atmosphere, the CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team also organised a variety of activities, including face painting and performances in the Club’s interactive booth at the Competition Village.
In the Guangdong Competition Region, in addition to its donation, the Club provided technical support for the equestrian events in six areas, leveraging its extensive experience in organising horse sports competitions. This included support for venue design, horse welfare, anti-doping, stable management, event service and support, and publicity and community engagement. The Club also supported the organisation of various official activities, volunteer services and promotion work.
Club Chairman The Hon Martin Liao, Vice-Chairman Lester Huang, Steward Anita Fung, Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, and Executive Director, Corporate Affairs Raymond Tam were honoured to present medals to winning athletes in the Hong Kong and Guangdong competition regions. They also cheered on Club staff who provided professional support for events in both Hong Kong and Guangdong.
Jockey Club receives two accolades for its institutional innovations in support of the equestrian events of the 15th National Games
In addition to being a major donor to the Guangdong Competition Region, the Club actively contributed to the successful organisation of the equestrian events. With the strong support and co-operation of government departments at the Central, Guangdong provincial, Shenzhen municipal, Guangming district and HKSAR levels, the Club supported institutional innovation through enhancing "Five Connections" in the areas of veterinary practice, equine drugs, veterinary equipment, anti-doping testing, experience exchange and publicity – providing valuable experience to strengthen integration of the Greater Bay Area (GBA).
Eight national and provincial level institutions, including the Executive Committee of the National Games in the Guangdong Competition Region, the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies, and the Hong Kong and Macao Work Office of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, jointly selected outstanding research and practice on the topics of integration and collaboration within the GBA in the context of the National Games. Out of more than 600 submissions nationwide, the Club received the “Excellent Research Finding” and “Exemplary Case Study” accolades for its institutional innovation through “Five Connections”. The Club is the only Hong Kong institution to receive both accolades.
The Club is honoured to receive these accolades, which demonstrate the authorities’ appreciation of new measures and cross-border mechanisms implemented by the Club for the National Games. These not only ensured the success of the equestrian events but will also serve as “National Games precedents”, with great potential to benefit other aspects of regional co-operation in the future.
Also helping to strengthen co-operation is the “Agreement on Strengthening Sports Cooperation and Promoting Integrated Development” recently signed by the General Administration of Sport of China and the governments of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. Leveraging opportunities presented by the 15th National Games and NGD & NSOG, the Club will co-operate with government departments and mobilise its strength in world-class equine sports and charity in support of stronger sports integration and development of the country and the GBA.
The Club is a world-class horse sports and entertainment organisation with a strong commitment to the country and Hong Kong. It has long been a staunch supporter of the nation’s major sports events, including the equestrian events of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games. For its contributions to each of these events the Club was honoured as an “Outstanding Contributor”.
