The HKJC Pass It On - District Elite Coach Education Workshop has been successfully concluded. The six-session workshop of theory and practical lessons was attended by 30 local coaches who were determined to continuously improve themselves and discover new ideas. John Peacock, consultant of Manchester United Academy and instructor of the workshop, was delighted to see that many coaches in Hong Kong are devoted to better equipping themselves. He believes that Hong Kong football is destined to have great achievements.

Hong Kong people live a busy life, therefore committing themselves to seeking personal development after work takes a lot of passion and determination. Since February, the coaches of Hong Kong’s youth teams from different districts have sacrificed six evenings after work to attend the HKJC Pass It On - District Elite Coach Education Workshop, hoping to enrich their knowledge and offer their teams more effective training. John Peacock held the coaches in high regard, saying: “Their hunger for knowledge will lead them to success.” He believes that in the long term, Hong Kong’s football standard will rapidly progress, adding that it may not be a dream to see coaches from Hong Kong one day leading a Premier League football team.

Workshops are the best way to move Hong Kong football forward

It may be too soon for a Hong Kong coach to achieve a position at the top of a European league team, but efforts made by Hong Kong coaches in recent years have been obvious to all. One only needs to look to Chan Yuen-ting, who became the world’s first female football coach in 2016, and then went on to lead her team to win the men’s championship trophy in the Hong Kong Premier League. More recently, she was appointed assistant coach of the China U16 Women’s team. Her achievements have proven that the standard of football coaches in Hong Kong has gradually risen and is being recognised. Chun Ming Chiu, HKFA Coach Education Manager, was thankful for Peacock’s visit and for his efforts in training local coaches: “The HKJC Pass It On - District Elite Coach Education Workshop is the best bridge between the grassroots and elite football. I believe our coaches will apply what they have learnt to their community football programmes, and ultimately nurture more football talents for Hong Kong.”

Two elite coaches look forward to Manchester exchange tour

At the conclusion of the workshop, Peacock nominated Michael Tsang and Steve Chau as the elite coaches of this year’s workshop: “All coaches worked very hard, but their contribution during theory and practical were phenomenal. They have applied what was learnt and their enthusiasm was very impressive.”

The two coaches will be sent to Manchester, England by the Club for an exchange, and both are extremely excited to be nominated as elite coaches. Actually, Michael was awarded the exchange tour to Manchester back in 2015 for his amazing performance in the HKJC School Football Development Scheme, but as he was busy preparing for his wedding, he was unable to go. He revealed that the upcoming trip is a sort of compensation: “I felt absolutely envious seeing other coaches sharing their experience on social media after the exchange tour. I enjoy teaching football a lot. It helps me to find myself.”

Steve, another coach, was equally thrilled: “My two friends, Nick and Jennifer, were nominated as elite coaches last year. I have been yearning for the trip after learning what they had experienced in Manchester. This will be my first trip to the UK and I really look forward to discovering the local football culture and lifestyle.”

Local coaches learnt a great deal

Steve expressed that the workshops have taught him the importance of patience and attention to detail: “As a coach, I can be short-tempered and irritable at times, but Peacock has taught me to slow down my pace, so that I will be able to better understand my team’s needs and prepare the appropriate training for them.” Chun Ming Chiu also indicated: “When Peacock is teaching, he asks the members and players questions and observes them at the same time, trying to figure out their standard and make corresponding adjustments, hoping to find the best teaching approach for his students. It is worth it for everyone to learn his approach.” Michael also thought that Peacock is very approachable and easy to communicate with.

Peacock left the members a question before he left: “Can the next best Asian player come from Hong Kong?” Coaches, what will be your answer?
