At times, seductions in the society confuse teenagers, making them lose their directions in life and forget their potentials. Joseph Ng, head coach for 18 years at Caritas Chong Yuet Ming School, believes that the best way to retrieve teenagers’ self-confidence is to put on their soccer shoes and fight side by side with their fella on the football field.
In his 18 years of teaching, one student who was referred by a counseller to join the football team, particularly impresses Joseph. Joseph witnessed his change from being an indolent student to one with self-confidence and self-assurance on the football field, and later even helped the school beat the defending champion at the inter-school competition. The fun, joy from victory and the sense of fulfillment from teamwork in football helped him to step out from his doubt in himself, retrieve his goal and motivation, and be positive with his future. Once a marginal youth, the student later entered into workforce and started his own business. This perfect ending has always inspired Joseph to do better.
Joseph sees that football is a gift in each individual. It brings teenagers who once set back confidence and directions. Through the JC School Football Development Programme, Joseph expects to become an all-rounded coach, training up the determination and courage of teenagers who once got lost.
