Stimulate growth with persistence (28/12/2016)

A teacher’s enthusiasm is most likely essential to a teenagers’ growth.

“I think every student can be taught. It only depends on when you will reap the benefits,” said Ken Kwok, who is passionate and persistent about teaching. Being a football fan since his childhood, he would like to see students at Lok Sin Tong Wong Chun Ming School make progress not only in their football skills; but, through taking part in competitions, also learn how to respect others.

  • Ken’s teaching philosophy is “no child left behind”. As a coach and teacher, he will not give up on any student or player who has limited capability. Instead, he continues to nurture them and believes that one day he will have the satisfaction of seeing them succeed.

Ken received football training at a young age and it was then that he began his journey of becoming a football coach. His passion in teaching has inspired him to join the JC School Football Development Scheme as he aims to become an all-rounded coach. Having dealt with a number of troubled students, Ken still remains persistent in teaching and hopes that they can be rewarded by football and become more connected to the world; have good manners, and learn how to respect and listen to other people’s needs.

According to Ken’s teaching philosophy, he firmly believes that with his persistence, teenagers can grow and flourish.

It is the persistence in teaching and the passion in football that open up Ken’s journey in football teaching.

As a Hong Kong Football Association Grade B coach, Ken has successfully led Wong Chun Ming to achieving satisfactory results at inter-school competitions. This year, the school became the third runner up in the Division 3 Kowloon 2 of the inter-school football competition. With such achievement, Ken, however, does not like to rest on his laurels, satisfied only with the improvement in students’ skills; he would like to see positive changes in their attitudes when interacting with others. Thereafter, he decided to enrich his teaching knowledge and explore new football teaching approach through participating in the JC School Football Development Scheme.

  • Ken’s passion and infectious enthusiasm in teaching has driven the players at Wong Chun Ming School to do better.

Form 5 student Oscar Yu deeply feels Ken’s passion for teaching and how hard he fights to maintain Wong Chun Ming School football team’s qualification in A Grade. Oscar had his first acquaintance with football in Form 1. His relatively late start on the sport was challenging, but Ken was always there to send encouragement. “Ken was always the first person to cheer me up and give me a whip when I had misses at training or competition.” It is because of Ken’s encouragement and trust that Oscar is able to learn from his mistakes and secure his position on the starting lineup, as well as embrace every challenge with a positive attitude.

According to Oscar, the patience and influence of Ken, together with the training approach which is dominated by four-on-four tournaments, has provided a huge opportunity for the players to collaborate with each other, and to experience the importance of having trust in their teammates and coach. Oscar is a testament to Ken’s teaching philosophy, which emphasises both development on skills and attitude.

Witnessing the growth and improvement in players (Updated on 15/08/2017)

To Sam and Ken, the two coaches at Lok Sin Tong Wong Chun Ming School, the most gratifying reward from the JC School Football Development Scheme is to witness the growth and improvement in players.

The two coaches opine that the training format of the Manchester United Soccer School puts emphasis on collaboration and communications, which not only benefits the team’s performance on field, but also improves their interpersonal skills off the field. The players have become more proactive, more enthusiastic and more disciplined, as well as more willing to listen to and accept others’ opinions. The expectation for the Scheme when they joined has been fulfilled after their continuous learning and attempts.

The training approach highlighted in the Scheme also strikes the two coaches. Sam and Ken who taught at the youth teams of Kowloon City and Kwun Tong both agreed that the details in the teaching of Christopher O’Brien, Head Coach of Manchester United Soccer School are a very valuable reference for local coaches in Hong Kong. They have also borrowed his expertise on teaching local schools, including changing the setup of the classroom room as well as the preparation before the training. This has fostered a closer relationship between the players and their coach.

“As a coach, applying all the knowledge and experience taught in the Scheme in teaching is the only way to benefit local teenagers”, Sam said. With his positive thoughts for applying what he has learnt, students at Lok Sin Tong Wong Chun Ming School can experience improvement in football.

  • By the motivation of innovative training approach, the players from Lok Sin Tong Wong Chun Ming Secondary School have become more proactive, more enthusiastic and more disciplined.
  • Sam believes that the values that the players learnt can bring the positive impact in their coming future.
  • Ken states that he will achieve the coaching philosophy of JC school football development scheme through continuous learning and practicing.
  • The coaching team from Lok Sin Tong Wong Chun Ming Secondary School is glad to see the improvements and growth of every player through JC school football development scheme.
