Qualifications are not everything (02/02/2017)
At the ELCHK Ma On Shan Lutheran Primary School (the ELCHK), 80% of students come from underprivileged or cross-border families. Its football team faces problems, such as a shortage of players and space, and the remoteness of players’ homes. However, Danny Leung, a teacher at the school, still insists in running a football team for the school as he believes that he can inspire the students to grow through football.
His passion for football and teaching leads Danny to participate in the JC School Football Development Scheme, through which he hopes to attain a coach qualification. However, after having a taste of the teaching approach under the Scheme, Danny gave deeper thought to teaching. Compared with attaining the coach qualification, which was his original intention, he now thinks that the basic requirement of a good coach is to know how to teach and to be passionate about teaching.
Danny believes that “a good coach is willing to learn and teaches with heart”. As far as one is persistent and passionate in teaching and never stops learning, he will become a good coach.
Redefine the meaning of coach (Updated on 28/03/2017)
Danny Leung has taught at the ELSHK for more than one year. As a ‘newbie’ to coaching, his original intention of joining the JC School Football Development Scheme was to attain the qualification of coach. The Scheme has, however, given him a new perspective in coaching, and managed to gain him the trust of the players, even though he is still a new teacher.
To Pak Hin, a primary six student at ELCHK, although Danny does not possess any football-related experience or qualifications, he still has more advantages than other coaches. “Danny sir teaches from his heart, and is willing to communicate with us, so that we naturally follow the coach’s steps and instructions. The teaching qualification is not a priority.”
Danny introduced the Manchester United Soccer School training approach to the school whereby players can have a taste of the tournament-led training. He expressed that under this approach, the team learns more from individual training, and can apply what they have learnt at competitions. It is a rewarding experience.
Danny believes that the fact that one-third of the football team is cross-boundary students and that the team lacks resources will not affect its development. He thinks that with a football and a passionate coach, the team is taught to treasure the training sessions and overcome those limitations. Pak Hin hopes that Danny can continue to learn high-level training approaches and put them into practice, so that he and his younger schoolmates can be rewarded with a broader perspective and a new vision.
Understanding the ultimate goal of coaching (Updated on 22/08/2017)
ELCHK teacher Danny Leung has received a great deal of benefits after three school visits conducted under the JC School Football Development Scheme.
Speaking of his rewards, Danny says, “The preparation work and details before the training arranged by OB, as well as his teaching during the actual training, have taught me that the ultimate goal of football training is to let students learn happily.” Although Danny is still a lesser-experienced teacher, the Scheme has boosted his confidence, enabling him to work towards the goal of being a football coach. He aims at putting smiles on every participant’s face during and after the football game. His confidence and vision in teaching are far more important than his qualifications!
The ELCHK team, just like Danny describes, have big smiles on their faces during training. They also demonstrate unspoken trust and better collaboration between themselves and the coaches, which helps to create a more positive training atmosphere. He also encourages all players not to retreat when facing difficulties, but to face them with positivity. Built on the basis of the training approach of the Manchester United Soccer School, they will work together to strive for better results!
