Multinational legion breaks the barriers with football (07/02/2017)

80% of the students represent ethnic minorities at Jordan Government School. The school’s football team is not only played by local students, but also Pakistanis, Nepali and Ghanaian students. Altogether they form a “multinational legion”.

Alex Leung has over ten years of football coaching experience. As the person-in-charge of the Jordan Government School football team, he hopes that through participating in football, the team learns how to exchange view and communicate with each other. Alex admits that when first set up, the team could not even say the correct names of their teammates. In order to break this colour barrier using football as the common language, Alex and Ada Wong, another teacher at school, joined the JC School Football Development Scheme. Through the programme, they hope to develop the Jordan Government School football team into one that embraces the coexistence of Chinese and foreigners and the harmonious atmosphere it brings.

Alex hopes that through football, all players, regardless of their colour and race, can widen their perspective and raise their self-confidence. This can prepare them for entering the society.

Striving to build a harmonious team (Updated on 17/05/2017)

It is no cinch for this multinational legion to overcome the barriers in language, culture and race. However, being the bridge for students from different countries, Alex and Ada strive to build a harmonious team.

Dredon Lam, a player from Ghana, says the team is equipped with some talented players. However, the team fails to give its best performance as there are often no interactions among the players and they tend to play according to their own way. Dredon joined the football team because he wants to be coached to improve his performance, and most importantly, to learn the importance of teamwork. He believes this can shape him into a real team player.

Thanks to football training by Alex, Dredon has become more proactive and willing to communicate with teammates from different countries; he also developed a broaden horizon. The team still requires some adaptations and adjustments to absolutely trust and count on each other; but Dredon keeps reminding himself to learn proactively, so as to meet his original expectation when he joined the team.

Breaking the ethnic barriers is not easy, but football can do its magic – it encourages players of different colour to attempt their first step.

Breaking the ethnic barriers (Updated on 04/08/2017)

After trainings during three school visits, the interaction among the Jordan Government School football players has been strengthened apparently. The improvement shown in the coach and players has surprised Principal Christine Wong.

According to Principal Wong, the school has admitted non-Chinese speaking students for a decade. The inclusiveness advocated by Principal Wong echoes with the objective in participating in the JC School Football Development Scheme, whereby students can learn how to get along with different races harmoniously through football. It is also hoped that through the Scheme, Alex and Ada can bring the world-class football training into the school and help the next generation thrive.

The two coaches agree in one voice that the Scheme has improved their way of teaching. They have given less lecturing and spared the time for students to try and learn. Besides, the fun and interactive learning approach taught in the Scheme has been brought into classrooms, enabling more students to learn about communication, interaction, forgiveness and elimination of discrimination.

Commenting on this multinational legion established two years ago, Principal Wong, Alex and Ada hope to see students open up themselves and overcome the barriers of nationality, colour and language, learn about mutual trust and thrive with the team.

  • Christine Wong, the principal of Jordan Road Government Primary School has been impressed by the improvement of the players brought by the JC school football development scheme.
  • Ada Wong delivers the coaching instructions to the player clearly during the training session.
  • Alex Leung thinks that football has enhanced the team cohesion and chemistry effectively.
  • With the help of football, the students can learn more about communication and interaction, forgiveness and elimination of discrimination.
