Build up trust that holds the team together from football (02/02/2017)
Darren has been a teacher at Pui Kiu Middle School for three years and is the person-in-charge of its football team. He believes that football can be a medium for discovering the unknown side of students. It is hard to get to know more about his students in view of the very busy class schedule. Football, however, is a more effective channel in exploring and developing the potential of young people, he thinks.
Despite the fact that all players at Piu Kiu Middle School football team are passionate about football, there is, however, a significant difference of competence. Those with strong performance tend to demonstrate individualism during competitions and trainings; they choose to only pass the ball to players with better performance, leaving aside the importance of team spirit in football. This has forced Darren to reconsider his training programme so that it not only takes care of the different needs of players at all levels, but also builds up confidence for players with weaker skills. Through the participation in the JC School Football development Scheme, Darren teaches his team according to the Manchester United Soccer School training approach, puts all players in the role of ‘captain’ and discovers their leadership quality. He drives the team to improve together and immerse them into O’Brien’s core thought - ‘Work together’. There is no doubt that trust is an indispensable element in building strong tactic understanding and collaboration among the players and the selflessness.
Darren hopes that through the JC School Football Development Scheme, the gap between players’ competence can be compensated by trust so that they trust teammates on the football field, trust others off the field. He hopes the team can become a team which marches in consistent pace and improves together.
Trust the teammates on and off the pitch (Updated on 31/05/2017)
For the team to experience trust, it requires the players to care less about difference in competence and establish their courage in expressing themselves. Each individual should motivate the team with their performance and together form a team with strong cohesion.
For Kwan Wong, forward of Pui Kiu Middle School football team, expressed that the attendance of the players are rather unstable due to busy school work and schedule of curricula activities. However, through the JC School Football Development Scheme, Darren managed to bright up the training atmosphere of the team. The relationship within the team has also been enhanced through high intensity training in skill and the tournament-led approach which trains up football skill.
For Kwan praises Darren for being a coach who is willing to accept new things and ideas. To raise the team’s performance on football field, Darren proactively arranges friendly matches with other schools, as well as discusses with the players on new football training approach. The professional and new training approach offered by Manchester United Soccer School enables the team to embrace the difference in competence and reunite the team. They will break through and improve together on the football field.
