Fanling Government School is a known for its strong contingent in the primary school football league. It is also a cradle of a number of talented young football players in Hong Kong. In recent years, the old champion has however faded away and entered into their adjustment period with declining results. Once the most frequent winner at the prize presentation stage, they have now failed to even stand out from group stage in competitions. This has urged Siu Yin Koo, who has been the lead of the team for 18 years, to explore a new, impactful football coaching style that can release the potential of the players and move them forward.
As a seasoned coach of the team, Coach Koo admitted that the training hours of football teams at schools nowadays are far behind that the past. When quantity of training does not meet the requirement, quality becomes a key determinant. To lead the team out of the tunnel of underperformance, Coach Koo decides to lay down his burden as a traditional coach and joined the JC School Football Development Scheme. He hopes to explore the new direction for football training through the scheme, as he believes that every player would meet coach with different style at different stage. As a primary school coach, he thinks it is most important to build a solid foundation for the young players, enabling them to stand firm and achieve higher through their football journey .
Relearn the way of coaching (Updated on 13/06/2017)
To Coach Koo, 18 years of coaching not only represents experience but also a mental burden. It is students’ expectation on football that encourages him to rethink and relearn the way of coaching.
Fanling Government School has a constant winning history at inter-school football competitions. To them, football not only is a sport that the school prides on, but also a long-lasting culture which has been inherited and passed on. Siu Yin Koo’s alumnus identity also naturally bestows him a mission to nurture new blood for the school’s football team.
Principal Yu firmly believes that football helps young players develop self-discipline. They can also learn other skills and principles such as how to collaborate with and listen to each other, and put theories into practice. The coach is expected to accumulate these lessons learned with the children. In Principle Yu’s eyes, Coach Koo is a serious teacher who is attentive to details and boasts numerous years of experience in football coaching. His background, coupled with the professional football training system taught at the JC School Football Development Scheme, has enabled the football team to gain brand-new thinking and stimulation against the school’s traditional football background. The Scheme has provided a better and more positive learning environment for the team, helping them to regain the motivation to learn, and allowing the school to preserve the renowned football tradition and pass it on to the next generation.
Principal Yu hopes Coach Koo can inspire the students to be passionate about their school lives and even learning through football.
