New approaches to learning help teachers and students move forward

A conscientious and passionate working attitude is what defines a person’s achievements, and this is exceptionally true of teachers. A great teacher can change a student’s life or even the next generation and the whole of society. KK Sir, a teacher at Chinese Holiness College, is a prime example. Being a teacher and a coach of the school’s football team, he joined the fifth JC School Football Development Scheme, hoping to better equip himself and provide more professional training for his students, so that together they can put their best foot forward.

  • Other than being a teacher at Chinese Holiness College, KK Sir is the head coach of the school’s football team as well.
  • KK Sir is not only a teacher to Enoch Tam but also a friend.

Strategic training engages students

Six months after adopting new training strategies, KK Sir noticed a tremendous change in himself and in his students. “In the past, attendance at training sessions was relatively low because the students lacked passion. This year, we saw a lot more passion in them as they immersed themselves in the training. Their positive attitudes gave the team twice the results in half the training time.”

The key to the team’s improvement was the introduction of the Manchester United Soccer School training module that KK Sir had learnt from the Scheme. In adopting the School’s student-led training approach, he made them feel more engaged. Like most local coaches, KK Sir used to focus on his players’ technical skills, and would repeatedly explain the theory. After joining the Scheme, he realised that the most fun in football comes from practice instead of theory. From then on, he allowed students to spend more time on the field instead of in the lectures. It took some time for the students to improve their skills; but through practicing and reminders from the coaches and teachers, they learnt from their mistakes and even made faster progress.

Christopher O’Brien (OB), Head Coach of the Manchester United Soccer School Hong Kong, applauded KK Sir and the teachers and students of China Holiness College for turning over a new page: “KK sir is a very detail mind coach, he set up the pitch based on the students’ habits, which makes the training systematic even the space is limited. Students left with laughter, and you can see the (training) section is a successful one.”

  • Christopher O’Brien (OB), Head Coach of the Manchester United Soccer School Hong Kong, praised the performance of CHC students.
  • Having joined the JC School Football Development Scheme, KK Sir is willing to apply what he had learnt from the Manchester United Soccer School training module.

Professional and challenging training can pique students’ interest

The meticulous training set up by KK Sir was greatly appreciated by his students. Enoch Tam, a Form 5 student, opined that after the school had participated in the Scheme, the training has had clearer objectives and has become more challenging. Students now believe that they are undergoing professional training, and consequently they become more passionate about football. They also become more active and engaged.

KK Sir is not only a teacher to Enoch but also a friend. Looking back at the time when Enoch first joined the team, KK Sir said that he has witnessed a significant change in him. Enoch used to stamp his feet in anger when he had disputes with other teammates, but now he has learnt how to express his feelings to the coaches. He has a stronger attachment and sense of belonging to the team, and from time to time he volunteers to serve his teammates, doing things such as purchasing jerseys for them and reminding them to attend the training.

KK Sir is very proud of and content with the improvements and developments of his students. He encourages more schools to participate in the Scheme, as it will give him more opportunities to exchange ideas and move forward with other coaches. He also hopes to inspire more students to take up football, so that he can help them to shine.

  • Students area more passionate as they immersed themselves in the training.
  • By adopting the School’s student-led training approach, KK sir observed the students learnt from their mistakes and made faster progress.
  • Enoch Tam opined that the training has had clearer objectives and has become more challenging after the school had participated in the Scheme.
  • The star player of the session received the award from KK sir.
