Lesson from Johnny: 100 ways to inspire communication

24/05/2023

Effective communication is essential for any leader, since it serves as the glue that holds a team together. Throughout his life, Johnny held a variety of roles, including that of an architect, football commentator, and actor. A man of many talents, his vast experience and diverse people network have sharpened his appetite for change and communication skills, making him an apt role model for the students of the JC Youth Football Leadership Scheme.

Sharing with students about the key to good communication, Johnny emphasized the importance of listening, finding a middle ground between persuasion and compromise, and using a variety of ways for self-expression. “As long as you listen carefully to what others are saying, you can put aside the win/lose mentality and try to find common ground. Also, today’s young people are highly imaginative and can express themselves through a wide range of creative outlets like music or video. These can all stretch the possibilities of communication.” When it comes to becoming a leader, he encourages the students to put their hearts into it: “Be confident in every decision you make for the team.”

After participating in a series of workshops and football community activities, student leaders will face their biggest challenge yet – the joint football carnival, where nearly one hundred kids from different areas of Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories will come together for a day of fun football matches. We look forward to seeing the student leaders practice what they have learned in the Scheme and brave this challenge together.

  • Johnny encouraged the student leaders not to limit their potential, and to have the courage to seek change.
  • Aside from sharing his personal experiences, Johnny also bonded with the students over a game of shuttlecock.
  • Students participated in group discussions to prepare for the joint football carnival.
  • Johnny’s leadership training offered a mix of active and mild activities. Here are his happy students posing for a group photo together.
