Learning how to communicate effectively is not such a difficult thing. Sammy Leung, a seasoned radio broadcaster, master of ceremonies, and one of the star instructors of the JC Youth Football Leadership Scheme, was tasked with teaching the programme’s young leaders how to creatively improve their communication skills to empower their messages. Leung’s extensive experience in media communications was a great benefit to all youngsters.

A celebrity who has been active in movies, television and radio over the past 20 years, Leung’s quick-wittedness and amusing performing style won him a large number of loyal followers. Known for his talent in humourously pumping up the mood, Leung is an experienced entertainer and television host, and the winner of many “Best Programme Host” awards. His incredible nimbleness, effective communication skills, and the ability to articulate are the keys to his success.

Communication is the bridge that brings people together, but it takes time to build up the skills; something that Leung, previously a guest professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, knows only too well. During the one-hour communication skills workshop, Leung and the youngsters had a relaxed and interactive question-and-answer session. The young leaders were quite intimidated at first, but the mood quickly lightened and they bonded with each other, filling the classroom with laughter. This was a testament to Leung’s scintillating talent and wittiness.

During the Q&A session, Leung taught the class that communication is not just a verbal thing; it also involves generating creative ideas in order to empower the message and grasp the attention of the audience. He stressed that a successful idea should be reasonable but must come with a surprise; it should also be innovative and be crafted logically with interesting content to generate a reaction from the audience. Only then could this two-way communication be defined as a success.

The young leaders believe that having creative communication skills could certainly benefit them as they conduct community service and develop children’s interest in learning. At the same time, the children will find it easier to understand their instructions, and the leaders could manage the events more proficiently and skillfully.

Creative communication is one of the key elements to be a successful leader. Leung revealed that when he first became a radio broadcaster, he paid close attention to detail. He would try to identify unique qualities, and he trained his mind to think from different perspectives. He reminded the class that creativity is not purely fictitious; it is developed through observation of the very real things around you as you repeatedly look at and mull them over. He stressed, “Nothing is impossible. Where there’s thinking, there’s possibility”.

Leung also encouraged the young leaders not to be afraid of rejection, because creativity is all about “trying until you succeed”. Through the workshop and Leung’s professional instruction, the young leaders hoped that they could apply their creative communication skills when organising community service activities. They also believed that the workshop would enable them to improve the efficiency of cooperation amongst their teammates; helping them to solve problems on-site and to plan unforgettable and fun football training sessions for the children.

In addition to communicating creatively, having a positive attitude when communicating is also a key element for serving the community. Leung noted that self-confidence is the foundation of successful communication, and reminded the young leaders to communicate with people in an optimistic and positive manner. Even if they could only impact one person, they must remain confident and have the courage to express their own ideas, because this is the way to become a successful leader and to eventually benefit children in even more districts.
